Pastors & Elders
Our pastors and elders are, first and foremost, shepherds (1 Peter 1:1-3) who carry the responsibility of caring for people as Christ would.  We reject the model of the church operating like a secular corporation. Our pastors are not CEO's and our elders are not board members.

Our pastors are hired by, and, accountable to, the elders. Cornerstone's elders are appointed by other elders (no specified term of office) to be spiritual overseers and protectors of the flock (Acts 20:28-31). They oversee all the ministries of the church but they do not make finance decisions. We think financial decisions should be made by those who are closest to, and most affected by, the decisions. At Cornerstone, those would be our ministry team leaders -- lay people (singles or couples) who lead the various ministry teams and who meet once a quarter to get updates and make financial decisions. When the elders don't have to mess with the money, it's amazing how much time they have to actually "elder!"

Barry Arnold is the primary teaching pastor and leader at Cornerstone. The son of missionary parents, Barry grew up on the Yukon River in an Athabascan Indian village 300 miles from the  nearest road in Alaska's interior. After getting his degree from Multnomah Bible College, Barry, and his wife, Vicki, went back to interior Alaska where they spent twelve years church planting with InterAct Ministries. In 1993, Barry joined the staff of Good Shepherd Community Church where he served as pastor of Global Outreach for ten years. Joel Woodard met his wife Amy while serving on a short term mission trip to the Czech Republic. He grew up moving a number of times around the South and it didn’t take much encouragement for him to move to Portland, OR to pursue his bride. They were married in 2001. The last six years they spent pioneering two youth ministries in Slovenia with Josiah Venture.  There is always something happening in their home with three small children, Abigail (born 2006), Elijah (born 2008), and Caleb (born 2009).
